What is PET CT Scan?

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that can help reveal the metabolic or biochemical function of your tissues and organs.A PET scan is an effective way to help discover a variety of conditions, including cancer, heart disease and brain disorders. Your health care provider can use this information to help diagnose, monitor or treat your condition.

PET is documented as a nuclear medicine. Nowadays, CT (Computed Tomography) X-ray scan is also performed on the patient during the same session and with the same machine.PET scan is a visualising test that permits the doctor to diagnose the ailments of the body. During the process, a dye is used which involves radioactive tracers. These tracers are vaccinated into the body through a vein in the arm. The tracer gets diluted in the body. With the help of the tracer, the doctors are able to get an idea if the internal body organs are working properly.

Types of PET CT Scan

1. F18 FDG: FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) is a tracer molecule that is used to identify cells that are rapidly multiplying. Cancer cells are three times more active than the normal cells in the body, and therefore can show up in the image distinctively.
2. F18 PSMA: F18 PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) attaches to prostate tumor cells and flags their presence in the body.his test can be used for patients with known prostate cancer and a rising PSA level or for initial staging of prostate cancer. A PSMA PET scan is able to detect prostate cancer cells that can be missed by other imaging types.

3. Cerianna (18F-FES): Cerianna (fluoroestradiol F18) can detect estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer by attaching itself to ER+ cancer cells.Cerianna may be used for patients who have had a biopsy that shows ER+ cells. Cerianna can be used to identify any ER+ cells elsewhere in the body other than the biopsy site.
4. NetSpot (Gallium Ga 68 Dotatate) : NetSpot binds to the somatostatin receptors found in neuroendocrine tumors.Neuroendocrine tumors are a rare, hormone-producing type of tumor that can occur anywhere in the body but are most commonly found in the lungs, stomach, intestines, and pancreas.

Preparation of PET CT Scan

When you are scheduling your PET-CT scan, be sure to discuss the following topics with your health care team about your current medications. Bring a list of all the medications you take, including any vitamins or supplements. Ask if you should keep taking them before the scan.Any allergies or other medical conditions you may have.If you have diabetes. You may need special preparation if you have diabetes. If you are breastfeeding or may be pregnant. If you are claustrophobic and don’t like to be in small spaces.

Some people feel more relaxed when they listen to music. If this applies to you, ask if you can listen to music during the scan. That way, you can prepare your music and device in advance. The staff will ask you to sign a form that says you understand the risks and benefits of a PET-CT scan. It also says you agree to have the test. This is called a consent form. If you have concerns, talk with your doctor before you sign.
